Our Blackstone & Outdoor Cooking Setup for Full-Time RV Living

Outdoor cooking is one of the most valuable upgrades we’ve made to full-time RV living.

Outdoor cooking isn’t just about the food.
It’s about extending our living space, simplifying cleanup, and creating moments that feel intentional — even on travel days.
This setup lets us cook with confidence wherever we’re parked.

We travel in a fully electric motorcoach. We do not carry propane. Our appliances are electric, our heat and hot water run on diesel, and our outdoor cooking system was designed intentionally to match that setup.

Instead of one grill, we use three tools — each for a specific purpose:

  • Blackstone 22″ E-Series Electric Griddle
  • ASMOKE AS300 Portable Pellet Grill (Tahoe Blue – original Indiegogo launch)
  • GrillTime Tailgater Charcoal Grill

We’ve used the 22″ E-Series extensively for full-time travel, and it’s been the most reliable electric option we’ve found.

Every outdoor recipe on MostTimers links back to this page because the system is what makes the food sustainable long-term.

Why We Chose an Electric Blackstone (Not Propane)

Most RVers choose propane griddles.

We intentionally chose the electric 22″ E-Series because:

  • No propane storage
  • No fuel refills
  • No seasoning process
  • No rust management
  • Cleaner basement storage
  • Better alignment with a fully electric coach

We manage electrical load — not tanks.

How We Clean the Blackstone E-Series

The E-Series uses a ceramic titanium non-stick surface, which means it is cleaned differently than traditional steel Blackstone griddles.

There is:

  • No seasoning required
  • No oil re-coating
  • No aggressive scraping

Our method:

  1. Turn it off and let it cool slightly (still warm).
  2. Add a small amount of water.
  3. Use a plastic scraper to loosen food.
  4. Wipe clean with paper towels.
  5. Allow to fully dry before storing.

That’s it.

Fast cleanup means we actually use it frequently — which is critical for full-time living.

We use an ASMOKE portable pellet grill as part of our outdoor cooking system.

We originally purchased the AS300 in Tahoe Blue during the Indiegogo launch campaign. The current production model is the ASMOKE Essentials, which offers similar performance with updated refinements and is the version available today.

Even as vegetarians, we value the pellet grill for one reason: controlled wood-fired flavor.

We use our pellet grill for:

  • Smoked vegetables
  • Reverse-seared plant-based burgers or proteins
  • Stuffed peppers
  • Smoked mac and cheese
  • Wood-fired flatbreads
  • Roasted seasonal vegetables
  • Entertaining nights with friends and family

Why pellet instead of propane or charcoal?

  • Precise temperature control
  • Set-and-forget convenience
  • Consistent wood-fired flavor
  • Cleaner operation than traditional charcoal
  • Electric operation that fits our overall system

Because we travel in a fully electric coach, the pellet grill integrates seamlessly into how we already manage power.

It complements the Blackstone perfectly:

  • Blackstone for high-heat and fast cooking
  • Pellet grill for controlled roasting and smoke flavor

When We Want a Quick, Low-Cleanup Meal

We also carry the original GrillTime Tailgater charcoal grill for situations where simplicity matters most.

We primarily use it during Harvest Hosts stays or while boondocking, when we want a quick meal with minimal cleanup and very low water use.

Most of our charcoal cooking is foil-based vegetarian dinners — simple, self-contained meals that cook directly over the coals.

Typical examples include:

  • Foil-pack seasoned vegetables
  • Charred corn and peppers
  • Potato and onion packets
  • Grilled plant-based proteins
  • Mixed vegetable medleys

What makes the Tailgater different is the built-in battery-powered electric fan.

That fan:

  • Speeds up startup
  • Maintains steady heat
  • Uses less charcoal
  • Creates a more efficient burn
  • Reduces temperature swings

Because airflow is controlled, we only need a small amount of charcoal to reach and maintain cooking temperature.

For RV travel, that matters.

We don’t have to carry large quantities of fuel, and we avoid the unpredictability of traditional charcoal grills.

It’s not our everyday cooking method — but when we need a fast, contained, low-cleanup meal in a non-hookup setting, it’s the right tool.
